What is MonaCoin (MONA)?
Monacoin (MONA) is an open source digital currency and a peer-to-peer (p2p) payment network. It has been described as “the first Japanese cryptocurrency,” and is intended as a decentralized digital currency for Japanese citizens.
Conceived in December 2013, Monacoin was officially born on January 1st, 2014 with no premine. It is a hard fork of Litecoin and has implemented Segwit and the Lightning Network. It uses Lyra2REv2 and Dark Gravity Wave v3 to guide mining, ensuring fairer opportunities for miners.
The instance of a Japanese national using Monacoin to buy land made news in the country and beyond, spreading the popularity of the coin.
The project has focused on serving its home user base in Japan, with updates to improve user experience. The team remains anonymous and there is no visible roadmap; however, updates such as Segwit and Lightning Network implementation have occurred, reflecting ongoing development.
